[Minerals]Conflict/Responsible Minerals Update: RMI Smelter Lists

11 Dec 2024

Through the previous post, we explored RMI (Responsible Minerals Initiative) and CMRT (Conflict Minerals Reporting Template). This time, let’s delve into the smelter lists provided by RMI.

The Importance of Smelter Lists

RMI views smelters as critical management targets to ensure responsibility and transparency in mineral supply chains. This is because smelters act as "pinch-points" i) within the mineral supply chain. By tracking mineral sourcing at this stage, companies can manage supply chain transparency and responsibility more effectively.

  1. Facilitating Responsible Mineral Sourcing:

    • By verifying the origin and responsible sourcing of minerals through smelters, companies can systematically reduce overall supply chain risks.
  2. RMI’s Smelter Assessment Program (RMAP):

    • RMI categorizes smelters as either Active (under assessment) or Conformant (meeting responsibility criteria) ii) through its assessments.
  3. Supplying ESG Reporting Data:

    • RMI provides smelter information to support companies in meeting ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reporting requirements.

i) Pinch-points:

  • The choke points within the mineral supply chain represent a critical stage where all raw materials must pass, enabling transparency in sourcing and production speed without compromising sustainability.

ii) Active and Conformant :

  • Active: Smelters currently undergoing assessments.
  • Conformant: Smelters meeting RMAP standards.

Facilities Lists and Smelter Reference Lists

RMI offers Facilities Lists and Smelter Reference Lists to enhance supply chain management. Both lists play roles in ensuring compliance, certification, and safety throughout the supply chain.

Facilities Lists

  • RMI Eligible Facilities List:
    • A systematically organized list of facilities operating within the mineral supply chain.
    • Includes both upstream and downstream facilities.
    • The CMRT/EMRT reports define choke/pinch-point facilities as smelters, refiners, or processors.
  • RMI Active and Conformant Facilities List
    • A list of facilities that have achieved either Active or Conformant status according to RMI assessment standards.

Smelter Reference Lists

The latest smelter reference lists provided by RMI include detailed information such as the names, certifications, and locations of smelters situated at the supply chain's pinch-points. The currently available lists are as follows:

  • 3TG Standard Smelter List
  • Cobalt Standard Refiner List
  • Mica Standard Processor List
  • Standard Processor List for All Other Minerals (Including aluminum, copper, lithium, nickel, and 16 other minerals)
  • Revision History (Records of operational changes, name updates, and other revisions)
