[IMDS] IMDS Update: Introduction to the PCF Function in IMDS Release 15.0

18 Feb 2025

Previous Posts

Summary

  • From Release 15, all modules/MDSs can include carbon footprint (CF) data.
  • PCF is entered in the Ingredients tab, and TCF in the Recipient Data tab.
  • Recipients can view only the CF value of the top-level MDS.
  • A PCF contact person has been added.

Overview

Starting with Release 15, all modules/MDSs can include carbon footprint (CF) information.

CF data is categorized into two types:

  • Product carbon footprint (PCF): Entered in the Ingredients tab; represents the CF value at the production site where the product is manufactured.
  • Transport carbon footprint (TCF): Entered in the Recipient Data tab for each recipient; represents the CF value during transportation from the production site to customer sites.

CF data is entered in "kg CO₂e/component" for components and "kg CO₂e/kg of material" for semi-components and materials.

Similar to regulatory information, PCF and TCF data can be updated without generating a new version of the module/MDS.

Product Carbon Footprint

PCF data consists of production site information and the corresponding CF data.

Production Sites

Production site data is displayed in tabular format in the Ingredients tab, and multiple entries can be added.

After the PCF function is introduced, production sites cannot be deleted, only discontinued.

Discontinued production sites can be reactivated by generating a new version.

PCF of Referenced MDSs

The "PCF of referenced MDSs" field appears at the top of the production sites panel, displaying the total PCF of all referenced lower-level nodes.

The percentage in parentheses indicates the proportion of referenced lower-level nodes that contain PCF data.

The minimum sum of PCF values from all lower-level nodes is used as a validation benchmark. If the PCF value entered in the top-level MDS is lower than this sum, a warning is displayed.

PDS, DQR

PDS (Primary Data Share) and DQR (Data Quality Rating) are also retrieved from referenced nodes.

※ DQR is divided into Technology (TeR), Time (TiR), and Geography (GeR).

Detailed GHG Emissions, Carbon Content

The Detailed GHG Emissions and Carbon Content fields are hidden by default and are set to a default value of 0.

Transport Carbon Footprint

TCF represents the CF during transportation between production sites and customer sites.

It is displayed in the Recipient Data tab in the MDS.

A Transport Route is created for each combination of Production Sites and Customer Sites.

Discontinued Production Sites cannot be selected for TCF input; if a previously selected site is later discontinued, its connected TCF data is automatically discontinued.

Once TCF data is released, Production Sites and Customer Sites cannot be deleted, only discontinued.

If a discontinued Production Site-Customer Site combination needs to be used again, a new version of the Transport Route must be created.

Below is the Transport Routes addition and editing input screen.

PCF Data Flow in the Supply Chain

IMDS recommends not rejecting MDS submissions based solely on the presence or absence of PCF data.

Therefore, PCF data in recipient MDSs becomes visible only after the MDS is accepted.

Visibility of PCF Data in Approved MDSs

  • Recipients can see TCF data only after the MDS is approved.
  • Only the Production Sites used in the TCF entry are displayed.

Visibility of PCF Data in Referenced MDSs

  • In an approved or published MDS, referenced lower-level nodes display only DQR and PDS values, without revealing exact locations or actual PCF values.
  • Since published MDSs do not contain TCF data, all Production Sites are fully visible.

PCF Data Updates

  • Once new PCF data is released, it becomes immediately visible to all companies in the supply chain.

Copying and Version Management of Modules/MDSs

When a module/MDS is copied or a new version is created, the latest PCF and TCF data is copied into the new module/MDS.

However, data marked as discontinued is not copied.

PCF Contact Person

A PCF contact person has been added for inquiries.

  • When entering PCF data, a PCF contact person must be designated.
  • If no PCF contact is set, the default PCF contact person is assigned. If this person is inactive, their contact information is replaced with the general contact details.
